REPRESENTATION:

1) How are women represented in His Dark Materials? Are gender stereotypes reinforced or subverted? Think about Lyra and Mrs Coulter here.

In His Dark materials (1995 – 2000), conventional gender roles are denaturalized and overthrown. Stereotypical female figures such as Eve, the femme fatale and the sexualized Gypsy female are taken apart from the pretexts, re- inscribed and reassembled to form a fresh and subversive ideological configuration.

2) How are men and masculinity represented in His Dark Materials? Think about Will and Lee Scoresby here.

Men in his dark materials like WILL taking care of lyra like cooking for her and listening to her orders and not overpowering her is bringing down his mascularity and making him more feminine in the 2000s

3) How is age (e.g. teenagers; adults) represented in His Dark Materials? Does the show reinforce or challenge stereotypes about young people? Think about Lyra and Will plus the abandoned children they meet. Also think about Mrs Coulter and other adults.
